Love THIS overheated noiromance from Nicholas Ray. I rewatched it on Christmas eve and totally forgot there’s a sad little Christmas-on-the-run in the movie!
Beautiful dispersal pattern in the sky from this rocket-stage spinning. It’s best at 1:36.
HERE is a nice house mix from Big Pack. It’s a FREE download!
More great music from Vicki Powell.

Elric Kane rec. This one’s pretty fucked up! Merry Christmas!
Here’s a FREE DOWNLOAD. It’s a great mix by Pittsburgh’s own Kiernan Laveaux for Honcho.
Christmas is not my favorite holiday, but this music kinda almost gets me to feeling Christmassy. I don’t know why.
Just discovered this on YouTube –I’d love to see this in 3D, but it’s really good even in 2D. I think this effect would work really well in a narrative film.

Nosferatu is great, but I really like Faust too! Some really creepy imagery in this one.
Svankmajer’s Faust is an all-time favorite and Sokurov’s is definitely worth checking out too
Eight miles of glorious ice age graffiti was just discovered in Columbia. End to end burner!
Sweet electro mix from Legowelt.
And Lorenz Rhode had THIS nice house mix up this week.
This is certainly not an alien spacecraft, but I like the way it looks!

This one was recommended by Katie Stebbins in her zine about the films put out in 1978. Super fantastic performance by Carol Kane holy shit! Not much of a print on YouTube but definitely watchable imo.
I’m not sure why i didn’t know that Bix Beiderbecke wrote some beautiful piano music. This is nice stuff…
And for a completely different style of music, check out THIS REMIX of the hip-hop classic.
And I’m once again late to the party, but I just found Alina Perez on Insta. How great is she???
Check out Alina Perez’s website HERE.

I listened to an audiobook of Kim Gordon’s memoir, Girl in a Band, and she mentioned that her older brother used to torture her with this movie. He would tell her the hand was coming to get her. THIS is the perfect movie to freak out your little sister:
Am I the only one still thinking about the tic-tac video?
THIS MIX by Le Visiteur is everything a house mix should be: Funky. Glorious. Gay.
Here’s one of the tracks from the above mix. I remember hearing this out somewhere and I thought he was saying “I’m happy, I’m Hairy, I’m Gay” –I thought it was a song about being a bear haha.

I wanted to put up L’Atalante today, but I couldn’t find a free copy with English subs, so I’ll put up the also-brilliant Zéro de Conduite. This is up there with Over the Edge and Times Square as far as youth-in-revolt movies.
THIS ARTICLE by Adam Kotsko in The Baffler really gets at the heart of why politics in the U.S. feels so hopeless and dispiriting.
HERE is a nice mix by Lis Sarroca for Por Detroit…
Here’s some PG-13 femdom hypnosis videos from The Hive. Aside from their erotic qualities, the videos themselves are works of art:

I was familiar with the silent version of this story The Hands of Orlac (1924), but I’d never seen this one featuring a bald Peter Lorre. It’s Mad Love (1935).
THIS MIX from Ben Spalding.
Here’s a NICE MIX by Nathan Joy. Maybe ‘Dark Disco’ is a thing? IDK…
I forgot about this track until I heard it in an Overmono Mix

Here’s a cool doc, the subject matter and music is great as are most of the interviews/testimonials. The people who create the truly new thing never get the accolades or $$$ for it, that always goes to the second wave and imitators…
I want Criterion to put out a box set of rap videos from the 1980s. It would be cool to see them restored and transferred to blu-ray. Here’s a few I think should be included:

This movie is sexist but the central performance by George C. Scott is really charming. Definitely worth a watch. The eccentric New York side-characters are pretty great too.
Wallace Shawn puts his finger on something in THIS essay about Trump. His Night Thoughts is one of my favorite recent reads.
Those wacky Canadians have done it again.
THIS DEEP HOUSE MIX from Superbreak is a FREE DOWNLOAD. It’s sublime.
Here’s a delightfully square short doc about Ray Bradbury from 1962. It’s an accidental Wes Anderson movie.

Classic shit for Halloween…
Stephanie Monohan has a great essay on UFO and conspiracy culture on Real Life Magazine. She says “figures like Alex Jones [spread] distrust and anxiety, flattering their listeners’ intelligence for noticing that corruption exists at every level in society, and directing that momentum toward weirder conspiracies — even further away from any collective consciousness or action that would improve people’s lives.”
I firmly believe that no one could watch this clip of the Sisters Pointer and then vote for Trump.
GOOD VIBES against fascism courtesy of Bombyce (rhymes with nice!)

Movie cameras can be brutal machines. They pick up everything, like a marriage falling apart, an icy chill within a family, or a human being fraying at the edges. I think when they planned this TV movie, it was supposed to be a fun little celebrity travelogue…
I enjoyed THIS MIX by Fingerman.
Disco and funk radiate the positive energy the world needs right now. Never been to Atlanta’s Pride, but if THIS MIX is any indication, it’s glorious!
THIS ARTICLE in The baffler is a good rundown of some scary shit happening in law enforcement/surveillance right now. It also has some good links within the piece.

Lee Scratch Perry is resplendent in THIS DOCUMENTARY. He’s talking about excalibur!
We need the positive energy in THIS MIX right now!
THIS MIX is a FREE DISCO DOWNLOAD! It would be physically impossible for someone to listen to this mix and then vote for Trump. Disco is our only hope!!!
Nothing really happens in this ‘accidental documentary,’ but somehow it manages to sum up something about adolescence. If you stick with it till the end, it has an emotional gut-punch somehow. This is why I’m on Letterboxd –I’d probably never have found this movie otherwise.
GIRLS AT THE CARNIVAL

Don’t get me wrong, I love Vincent Price as a mustache-twirling villain, but the first time I saw Masque of the Red Death I thought his character was too evil to be believable. He plays a rich fuck who lets his followers get infected with a deadly virus and believes himself to be immune because he’s pledged his loyalty to satan… I mean… I guess Poe really knew what he was talking about huh?
Meanwhile, in China:
THIS hip-hop mix took me back…

Bruce Dern exudes sick-fuckery (sick-fuckedness?) in THIS hair raising motorcycle picture…
Dub music has healing powers, THIS is a brand new dub track from Holy Tongue…
I love the downtempo trippy shit on THIS MIX by Succubass:
Disco might just be our only hope. THIS is an excellent disco mix by Eva Crystaltips:
More disco??? Okay! THIS is a fun mix by DJ SCM:

THESE little kitty cats:
Is it really a surprise to learn that major banks are laundering money for cartels and kleptocrats all over the world? The FinCEN leak comes from the organization that was supposed to be policing this activity (but wasn’t). Our institutions are broken and corrupt and the evidence is incontrovertible.
HERE is a nice deep house mix from Andrey Pushkarev for Ubiyu:
And THIS MIX is a bit more on the tech-house side of things… Courtesy of Deeprhythms from Finland.
Eugene Levy has been doing great work on TV for a long time, as this episode of Ray Bradbury Theater proves:

This movie has a truly crazy low-altitude air chase, Elliot Guild trying to sleep with Karen Black, James Brolin eating rattlesnake raw, and that high-budget institutional cynicism that only 70s conspiracy thrillers can deliver…
I really want to hear Ghostface Killah rap over this beat…
THIS is a ravey electro-acid mix from Josh Caffé:

I’m a sucker for any movie that involves consciousness migration… This is “The Mephisto Waltz.” Alan Alda is always great. “Eternal Evil” (also known as The Blue Man) is similar.

Here’s a beautiful animated short by Gabriella Marsh. You can visit her website HERE.
Dance of the Ages is a wild little film from 1913. It survives because it features modern dance pioneers Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn. I wonder what they thought of the depiction of the entire history of humanity’s physical artistic expression being laid out for the enjoyment of a bunch of beer-swilling freemasons:
Thanks to Public Domain Review for sharing this on Instagram.
I love the illustrations in THIS article about the French werewolf epidemic over on dangerousminds.net

And here are two house music mixes that are FREE DOWNLOADS over on soundcloud. One is from Tin Man and the other is from Big Pack. Just because we’re living through breakdown of the medical, justice, climate, political, and social systems doesn’t mean we can’t listen to some good music!

Double creepy dream movie…
FREE DOWNLOAD –some nice chill house…
THIS is an incredible story of disaster capitalism. I’m not sure how they thought they could get away with this? A California dream house changes hands multiple times to hide a payoff.

THIS collection of photographs of roadside attractions is sublime.

Here’s a silent creepfest –THIS is the prototypical ‘old dark house’ movie. I like it better than Old Dark House. It would probably pair well with one of the deep house mixes below!
FREE DOWNLOAD! THIS is two back to back fantastic mixes courtesy of As You Like It.
Here in PA we’ve been getting FAKE ATTACK ADS against Trump. They’re supposedly attacking Trump’s healthcare policy as being too generous and too socialist. WOW. Clearly these are targeted to a suburban audience who favors the democrats when it comes to healthcare. It’s still August and things are getting pretty weird already…
HERE‘s a back-to-basics Latin house track I heard in a mix this week.
DJ Ra-Soul put THIS Simian Mobile Disco track in the mix above. I missed this track the first time around.
WE CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS! OUR CRIMINAL ‘JUSTICE’ SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!

This flick is a greasy, sleazy ride through 70s country-music ‘stardom.’ Rip Torn is bananas!
Here’s three songs/artists François K included in his Brazilian mix on Soundcloud:
and if I ever make a movie where someone tries heroin for the first time, this song will be the needle drop:
I really liked Mynarski Death Plummet, and this short is also by Matthew Rankin. He uses a very unusual and hypnotic animation style…

“I believe that the moment is near when the procedure of active paranoid thought will make it possible to systamatize confusion and contribute to the total discrediting of the world of reality.”
~Salvador Dali

Green Dutch is an underrated hip-hop artist in my opinion. He’s on Soundcloud and YouTube. Here’s one of his recent videos:

How great is Vince Edwards in THIS nuclear paranoia crime-in-the-street noir???
Some itches only tech-house can scratch!
Okay I have to read this book now. Octavia Butler predicted 2020.
In this video, Ballard describes being on a beach in Greece and forgetting where he lived. I think that says something about how creative minds work.
