BrokeWorld2022-2

December 30, 2022

This is why I’m on Letterboxd, I never would’ve found this weirdo-gem of a movie, Alabama’s Ghost. It reminded me of the comics of Kim Deitch with a little 60s American international shlock in there too. Loved it:

This Kathy Acker doc captures a lost moment in NYC history and made me want to read Acker’s novels. There’s a Mapplethorpe photoshoot in there too.

Aside from the erotic possibilities, this is a stunning work of video art:

Here are some soundcloud mixes I’ve enjoyed recently:

December 15, 2022

Recently caught Zardoz on TCM and then I wanted some more John Boorman so I wound up watching I Dreamt I Woke Up. It’s a pseudo-mystical autobiographical mini-doc. Also realized that he made Excalibur and Hope and Glory, two films I remember from the eighties but haven’t revisited. The doc is a five-parter on YouTube. “Your dream is our problem.”

I miss hand-drawn cartoons

Here are some house/disco/techno/hip-hop mixes that I’ve enjoyed since the last update:

November 11, 2022

I like this documentary about David Lynch, made durning the production of Lost Highway. Heard some of this stuff in the other Lynch doc, but this has some stuff the other doesn’t and we really need to look at the furniture he makes. The Badalamenti stuff is great too…

This is a cool French series about movies that is up on YouTube. Was this on French TV? Was this what they were watching while we were watching Siskel and Ebert? My fav so far is the one with Buzz Bezzerides. I love the story about the more experienced writer disavowing any credit for Buzz’s work and getting fired for it.

Here are a couple of house and disco mixes I’ve enjoyed since my last update:

October 27, 2022

Short Night of Glass Dolls is a weird flick. I find the idea that you could appear completely dead but still be conscious terrifying. Butterfly-glasses man will stick with me—that and the sound of tinkling chandeliers.

Wierdo lo-fi doo-wop from Sun Ra. There’s some gems in here:

Here are some mixes I’ve enjoyed since last time:

October 13, 2022

Watched this because of the soundtrack. Wow Monica Vitti! Holy shit, this made me want to finally track down Modesty Blaise, I might even watch an Antonioni movie now. Here’s The Girl with a Pistol:

Speaking of soundtracks, this one is great:

Nice article about Kon’s Perfect Blue from Ana Cecilia Alvarez over on RealLife.

September 22, 2022

Okay so Cherry 2000 is kinda great? I love the barbecue-dad aesthetics of the mad max cult and I love that if Melanie Griffith needs to find something in the super-scary apocalypse zone she looks at a Thomas Guide.

Here are the mixes I’ve enjoyed in the last two weeks:

Watched Intrigue in Los Angeles for the soundtrack and it is NOT a great film, but the villainess is delightfully unhinged and it has a clown burlesque routine that was worth the price of admission. I’ll never go into another strip club without wondering if there’s a mad scientist’s lab underneath.

September 8, 2022

Watched Force of Evil for Marie Windsor (the wised-up stunner from Narrow Margin), but she only has one and a half scenes… still pretty great, even though I was hoping that a tidal wave would just kill all the characters and put them out of their misery. The on-location cinematography is beautiful!

Props to Rhymezone, the best free resource for all your rhyming needs…

Here are two mixes I’ve enjoyed since last week, one is a six-hour disco live jam from Ben Jamin, and the other is a shorter live classic-disco set from Faz.

The algorhythm says if I like Umiliani, I’ll like Piccioni—and it’s right!

Sept 1, 2022

I think this is my favorite of the color noir flicks that were on Criterion streaming channel… It’s The River’s Edge from 1957.

The Morricone kick has led to an Umiliani kick. I’ve enjoyed this record:

Here’s a track from a movie called Intrigo a Los Angeles that I like. I’ll check out the movie and if it’s as good as the soundtrack maybe it’ll be next week’s flick:

LADYMONIX put out a record with some good house music for fall 22.

In this house, we appreciate Jeff Mills:

August 23, 2022

Here’s a nasty little color crime flick from 1953. It’s 3D too—man I wish I could see Inferno (1953) in a theater while wearing those red and blue glasses…

Cry Sugar, by Hudson Mohawke, is Hi-NRG candy-raver shit with some seriously sinister undercurrents. It might be a masterpiece.

Check out the megamix animated video thing for the album.

And for a completely different type of Cali vibe, here’s another video by underground filmmaker Steve Hanft:

My favorite Deepakalypse tune is Drummers.

Here’s two mixes that I enjoyed this week:

August 17, 2022

Gotta be a contender for one of the shittiest husbands in cinema. love the cat-and-mouse stuff with the (ex?) insurance agent.

Okay, I’ve been playing these four LP comps on a loop for over a week now…

Yeah Joe, WTF happened to the public option? The dems are like Lucy with the fucking football and it has to be called out and stopped. MEDICARE FOR ALL or GTFO!!!

Here are some mixes I liked recently:

August 8, 2022

Everyone’s been clamoring for a BrokeWorld update, sorry! Sometimes I just forget/don’t feel like it. Anyways, here’s one I’d been wanting to see for a long time, it’s the Monkees feature film written by Jack Nicholson, Head! Big thanks to Chsandcrax for posting a screenshot of the archive.org page for this on Insta…

Still one of the best ever…

Here’s three mixes I’ve been grooving to since last time:

Here’s a bonus movie, The Suspect for no particular reason:

July 21, 2022

Wanna watch a weirdly racist TV Movie of the Week about killer ‘Africanized’ bees? It’s Savage Bees—the poster might be the best thing about this one… Check it out anyway:

Hands of Orlac is a great flick, remade with Peter Lorre in the 30s as Mad Love. This is bits from the 1924 silent chopped up to some outsider illbient. Nice work builtbynanobots!

Nice chuggy house from Lorenc.

Some ominous tech-house from master of the form Paul du Lac:

Funky house mix from THEYTEE…

Have you heard this Elles record? It’s fun, sad, corny, heartfelt, epic, and brilliant.

July 14, 2022

Someone snuck Svankmajer’s Faust onto YouTube when I wasn’t looking. It’s one of my favorite movies ever, I’m so glad I can finally put it on here…

???

Funky disco mix from Charleze…

More disco you say? Here’s a FREE DOWNLOAD mix from Superbreak!

Here’s a superb house mix from Medlar:

July 6, 2022

Got into The Tall Target on TCM and then found the Train Cinema list on Letterboxed. That reminded me that I’d never watched Shanghai Express with Marlene Dietrich. BrokeWorld approved flick.

Here’s a bonus train flick, it’s Terror by Night, a Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes thing. Some good miniatures in this.

Disco summer 2022 continues with this Collective Groove mix for the Disco Waltons.

And these soulful house jams mixed by LADYMONIX for Daisychain…

June 30, 2022

FUCK THE SUPREME COURT!

I’m a sucker for any movie that takes place in an insane asylum. Here’s Don’t look in the Basement a weirdo indie horror flick from the 70s…

I can see why someone could become entranced by the image of Rose Hobart. Mentioned by Eddie Muller on Noir Alley…

Eva Crystaltips does it again, she’s on a roll this summer!

Here’s a nice mix from Mark Farina…

Yes, more disco is necessary. It’s the Disco Waltons for NDC.

June 22, 2022

Tired: amnesia plots—Wired: blackout plots. How terrifying s Robert Ryan in Beware My Lovely?

Smooth and cool as hell…

This mix by Fonte for Spaced is also cool and smooth…

Here‘s a rough one from S-Max for Acidelika.

I’m not sure what texture describes this mix from BrokeWorld fav Gabrielle Kwarteng. good shit though…

June 15, 2022

Saw that this was coming out on Blu-Ray and decided to watch it. It’s strange to me that this didn’t start a whole subgenre of films about victorian crackheads. Anthony Perkins is fantastic as usual…

Another gem from Steve Hanft this week:

Disco should play continuously in June. Here’s a mix I like from DJ Lauren Thompson:

Here’s more gloriously gay music, it’s a Summer Mini-Mix from Leonie Leon:

Oh you want some straight-up disco? Here’s a mix with some serious grooves in it from There Is No Planet Earth (what a relief).

Dust to Digital shared this on twitter. Wow!

June 8, 2022

I love how Ida Lupino handles her husband in this flick. She dismisses him at the first sign of a guy with real money… and who can blame her? She doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life running a bakery in old west Phoenix. Glen Ford makes a great psycho.

This track from AOW is immersive and trippy.

Here’s two short essay films from underground filmmaker Steve Hanft.

Here’s a great PRIDE mix from KEENAN.

This one FEELS like a pride mix, it’s THEYTEE for Daisychain.

June 1, 2022

In honor of PRIDE, here’s Querelle by Fassbinder!

Love this trick shot from Contact — I’m trying to write something like it into a script, but it’s just coming out really confusing haha!

Here’s a good mix from Lolo for Passe Partout…

This track makes me happy.

Space age chillbient shit from Rey Colino…

May 25, 2022

Kids are being murdered in schools because we need an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, stricter gun laws in general, and better mental health resources. We live in a harsh, hard world that DOESN’T GIVE A SHIT about human beings. No lives matter. Just money and power.

It’s time to overthrow the old order and get to work building a better world. This one’s broken beyond repair.

“Every time you hear a bell, a zombie drags a soul to hell”

976-Evil II

Okay, I like this footage, real or not…

Crystalline disco from Eva Crystaltips…

Downtempo house jams from Bombyce…

I want to see this doc…
