I used to update this website once a week, but these days I’m too busy trying to make enough money to pay my rent and bills every month. I’m also working on a bunch of Christmas-themed horror stories and planing my next screenplay. When I was trapped in an office promoting the Soul-Death Antimusic Scam Corporation, I could always take some time off from placating and/or glorifying assholes, idiots, and racists to throw a few links up—these days it’s trickier. Anyway, here’s the final update for the year-of-our-lord 2023:
Richard Linklater, who had the best movie of 2022 (Apollo 10 1/2) made this short in 2019 that I just caught up with. He misses ‘stakes’—or maybe he doesn’t haha. Seriously WTF kind of pigs are those???
Happy Holidays from Poland (?)
Here are two classical pieces I’ve been listening to:
And here’s a score by Riz Ortolani that I like:
Here are some mixes I’ve enjoyed since last time:

This was my fav of the Criterion Channel’s Gaslight Noir series. More in the gothic tradition I’d say, but man, this thing had me completely engrossed. This movie illustrates how getting fucked right can warp your perception of reality…
I’m not sure if this is for guitar players to practice to or what, but it sounds pretty good as-is to me!
Check out The Muffs rehearsal tape from 1991.
And here are some mixes that I’ve enjoyed since last time:

Wes Anderson recommended this doc on a french youtube channel. It’s a wild ride through the world of silent cinema, with great interviews from the people who made the movies. The one about stunt-people is incredible. Here’s the first one:
Here are the other parts: Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen.
Note: Ep. 10 is from a different uploader, and ep. four is skipped in the OP’s playlist.
Now I know where Erik B and Rakim got that beat, this video is an amazing early 80s time capsule:
Wow, Naomi Klein lays out how the right-wingers co-opt messages and groups (voting blocks) that the left has neglected. Her message to democratic politicians is clear: improve people’s material conditions or watch the lunatics win.
And here are some mixes I’ve been playing since last time:

A movie that encapsulates a whole aesthetic/vibe/whatever, it’s Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! I feel like this is a good flick to show teen girls who need to see female role models onscreen. Tura Satana 4 eva!!!
New Shabazz coming… check out the psychedelia
Those Faster Pussycat vibes got me thinking about My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. BLUE BUDDHA:
and here are some mixes I’ve enjoyed this summer:

Take a gander at some ballet propaganda. It’s The Red Detachment of Women, released in 1970 at the hight of the cultural revolution. It’s a movie based on a ballet based on a movie. Pointe shoes and rifles!
Where has this track been all my life?
Here’s some recent disco/house mixes I’ve enjoyed:
I recently watched The Unsuspected on TCM Plays and wow, Audrey Totter! She’s an inspiration! It’s a good flick that I’d never heard of before. It was on Noir Alley (I’d put it in the gothic category myself) and Eddie Mueller did one of his awesome intros for it:

Wanna watch a beautiful Italian actress have sex with a mentally-challenged stable boy, only for her compatriot to murder him at the moment of climax? It’s the deliciously unhinged Lady Frankenstein (1971).
Soundtrack to help you fully enjoy a depressive episode:
And some mixes I’ve enjoyed since last time:
And a bonus movie this week, Temptation (1946). This is worth the watch for the character Merle Oberon plays and the riveting setup. The payoff at the end leaves a lot to be desired, but it’s fun to rewrite it in your head so that she gets away with murder…

She feels handmade—it’s a post-apocalyptic adventure movie where they sell Trix cereal at open air markets and the warriors wear football helmets. Vaguely reminiscent of the barbecue-dad cult in the (better) Cherry 2000. Soundtrack is high-gloss fantasy-metal. Check it out:
Here are some mixes that I liked since last time:
Here’s another movie, Souls for Sale, written and directed by Howard Hughes’ uncle Rupert Hughes. Karina Longworth brought me here. Best to watch on mute—as with all silent movies, the music they put over it is grating (yes I know silent movies played with music).

Okay, I’m not sure why I rewatched this but it actually holds up really well in my opinion. I used to like this shit a lot when I was a kid. Pippi’s whole vibe and outlook on life is an inspiration—she models all the good parts of being an adult without the baggage that comes with actual adulthood. Hope and a hey and a hope sha na.
This guy is the mack:

Heard about this one on Pure Cinema Podcast. It’s really great, I’m not sure why it isn’t a classic with a bunch of sequels? It’s The Visitor (1979)
I love how the water looks in this. What a delightful little animation:
Here are some disco, house, and techno mixes that I’ve enjoyed since the last update:

Satyricon is my favorite Fellini (maybe after Roma) so this behind-the-scenes doc was a treat for me. I don’t know if I’d be a good director because I really liked the lady’s dancing that made Fellini angry… He thought it was bad? She did do it way better after he was such a dick about it haha. It’s Ciao Frederico!
To me, this mix is a perfect encapsulation of what 1995 felt like.
Here are some newer mixes that I’ve enjoyed this month:
I like this article by Travis Mushett about trying to read the future in German movies from just before Hitler’s rise to power. It doesn’t bode well for our superhero-obsessed times…
