Rancho Deluxe is a ridiculously enjoyable movie. The shot of Jeff Bridges and Harry Dean Stanton double reflected in a pong arcade game screen is just one of the film’s many delights. I doubt this one will stay up on YouTube for long:
This might be an acquired taste, but Lenny Dee was the DJ who rewrote my brain chemistry in a warehouse in Louisville in the mid 90s and turned me into a raver.
Lots of good dubbytriphopillbient tunes in this mix from Josh Tweek:
Thinking about summer and this fantastic set of tunes, and inspiring words, from Francois K…
Maybe next year will be better!

It’s finally the release day for The Reverse Birth Trilogy! This is a huge deal for me, I’ve never worked longer or harder on anything. I hope you like it, the ebook is free. I’m still working on formatting the paperback, that should be ready next month sometime. The cover is by the one and only Katie Kaplan.
In honor of Christmas, here’s a Canadian film about mind control:
This is how you do it right here.
Have yourself a deeply unsettling Christmas:
Diana Adams was one of Edward Gorey’s favorite ballerinas. From this clip I think I can see why…

The Kindred has some cool mad scientists and a really well-done tentacle monster…
I linked to this mix when it came out months ago, but I recently tried the link and it took me to a Morales mix by Miss Disco—which is pretty cool too—but anyways, here‘s the right link:
This close-up of a deer tick’s skin reminds me of eighties sci-fi/horror special effects. I love a good undulating shimmer.

This flick has some serious San Francisco location shots. The best is the creepy echoey catacomb place at the end. Recently featured on Noir Alley, it’s The Man who Cheated Himself.
Recently caught the Peter Chung interview on Cartoonist Kayfabe (go Pittsburgh), and he mentioned this show, Tiger Mask. I couldn’t find any full eps, but the OG 60s series opener looks pretty damn good!
Reminded of this tune by Uhh Yeah Dude podcast. Deep Gully by the Outlaw Blues Band. Super-funk.
Here’s Igor Gonya back with some energizer-house!

I always have time to groove to Soultronic.

I follow cherryz on letterbox, and when she reviewed this homemade Miami horror film from the 80s I had to check it out. Lucinda 4 Eva!
Great article from Lauren Collee at Real Life.
I like this Bud Powell record.
And here’s a cover-reveal for my new novel The Reverse Birth Trilogy —the artwork is by the one and only Katie Kaplan!

I’m a day late but hopefully not a dollar short. Here’s an anarchistic double feature. The first has Murray Bookchin (great) and the second describes a working anarcho-syndicalist society that flourished briefly during the Spanish civil war.
Some really fun weird shit in this week’s Q-Anon Anonymous podcast…
My favorite type of UFO/UAP footage —caught from an airplane window. Most likely fake but who knows…

When the capitalist system turns their friend into a monster, they go to a politician for help… Bad mistake. Here’s Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge, starring Pauly Shore, Morgan Fairchild, and a killer 80s era mall.
Here‘s a nice little time portal to the mid-nineties.
I don’t speak a word of French, but this short film starring Barbara Steele is riveting!
And for the last YouTube pick of the day this chilly Tuesday, it’s Orchestra Werner Drexler from Magrosi65.

I had no idea that THIS was a dance film… Delightful!
This is a gorgeous Dave Cooper short. It also works as a sequel to Malignant. I hope James Wan uses it as a blueprint for Malignanter when he starts writing it.
HERE‘s a fun mix from Towlie DJ.

Just figured out that Downunder Disco is the name of the DJ… HERE they are with Wahine with some funky shit.

My new favorite American giallo film White of the Eye…
Here’s three tunes I like from the Jazz Waltzes (50s-60s-70s) playlist:
Been a fan of Mira Calix for a good while, this video is pretty damn great…
and DISCO:

Caught this on TCM recently, it’s a perfect Halloween flick. I love the part where the nurse is leading the zombie-wife through the sugarcane at night…
Director’s Cut is my go-to Halloween record. I like this track.
And here‘s some funky house music for ya.
Happy Halloween

Doris Wishman’s prescient Nude on the Moon:
And the movie was probably the inspiration for this cool Tipsy song:
I think this is how we’ll get Medicare for All…
I usually like more chill and funky dance music but this shit kills…
The official position of the Brokeworld Corp is that love makes a family.

Bad things happening to bad people. Yes, it’s October.
Fear of a Black Universe:
Rewatched To Die For recently, and this track jumped out at me. NY hard house:
THIS is my NEW FAVORITE MIX, it’s Alison Swing for SlothBoogie.
And HERE‘s another good mix… Aussie disco.

I love Michael Caine in a comedy and I love him in a mystery, this one‘s both… And you get Ben Kingsley to boot!
Roller Boogie was better than any Marvel movie I’ve ever seen. This tune stood out for me:
I just listened to the audiobook of Joy Williams’ ninety-nine stories of GOD, and I wanted to start listening to it again as soon as it was over. This interview cracks me up.

Stephen Richards has done it again with this funky disco mix.
It’s October.

This film makes a good case against hippies. It first came onto my radar because Kim Gordon mentioned it in her excellent memoir, Girl in a Band. Worth a watch for sure…

Nightmare 4 is my third favorite (my list goes 3,1,4,5,2). I recently rewatched it and found this making-of doc on YouTube. Practical effects are the best.
The Acid Renaissance continues with this mix by Sassmouth for Polyglamorous…
I recently watched Roller Boogie on TCM and then this popped up on my SC feed. Excellent mix from Miss Disco.

I love the absurdity of the alien abductions in Communion… and of course Christopher Walken is always great.
Is this the first slasher movie? I don’t know, but I like the triangular three-way splitscreen and it’s always cool to support a filmmaker with a Pittsburgh connection (Lois Weber).
This HERE is my new fav mix.
Soaring shit from Clarisa Kimskii!

Finally watched this Fassbinder I never saw before on YouTube. Over the top, weird, and great…
I was laughing through the first half of I’m Thinking of Ending Things but by the end I was wrecked. The screenplay really feels exactly like the movie, same tone of dark humor mixed with surrealism, fatalism, and a ton of empathy for the living…
I love UFO/UAP footage—I’m not sure how I missed this back in 2008.
The acid renaissance continues.
3 hours of goodness from Mark Farina.

RIP Lee Scratch Perry. In his honor, I’m reposting this doc. I think this was shortly before he burned down his studio…
And one of my favorite Lee Perry records:

And more to the techno end of the spectrum…
And some pretty shit from Milio.
